Clouds in the Darkness
Part III
(read Gospel of Thomas)

Now, I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.
And you say, ‘What does God know?
Can He judge through the deep darkness?
Thick clouds cover Him, so that He cannot see, And He walks above the circle of heaven. Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. “Do you know how the clouds are balanced, those wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
Have you not known? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth useless. From him comes the cornerstone, From him the tent peg,
He made darkness canopies around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. Indeed, can anyone understand the spreading of clouds, the thunder from His canopy?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Will you keep to the old way which wicked men have trod?
Have you not heard?
There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
(Your fierceness has deceived you, the pride of your heart).
O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill! Though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.
He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south;
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the belt of Orion?
Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs?”
The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, in their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
"He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”
Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! For what good is the day of the Lord to you?
It will be darkness, and not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him! Or as though he went into the house, Leaned his hand on the wall, And a serpent bit him!
He turns the shadow of death into morning and makes the day dark as night; He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth; The Lord is His name.
Surely, your people in your midst are women! The gates of your land are wide open for your enemies; Fire shall devour the bars of your gates.
“I will send out the curse,” says the Lord of hosts; “It shall enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name. It shall remain in the midst of his house and consume it, with its timber and stones.
And He shall stretch out over it the line of confusion and the stones of emptiness.
And so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying,
‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.’
And while you are looking for light, He turns it into the shadow of death and makes it dense darkness. Everyone could sling a stone at a hair’s breadth and not miss.
Therefore it will happen, that they will say, ‘This is his wife'. And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder. As it is written:“Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair on my body stood up. “It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes...There was silence;
“O you afflicted one, Tossed with tempest, and not comforted, Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker?
The dead do not praise the Lord, nor any who go down into silence.
(They silenced my life in the pit and threw stones at me).
Then he said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talk with me.
Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth.
When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for Him—For the redemption of their souls is costly,
But if the Lord creates a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you will understand that these men have rejected the Lord.
And he said, “What have you done?
And the Lord God said, The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
Amen.
But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
